How Many Pairs of Socks Does One Person Need?

Posted by Alexandra on August 26, 2011 in Clutter |

This week I decided to tackle my sock drawer.  All I can say is ‘What was I thinking when I bought all these socks?’

When I was still working I wore a lot of trouser socks. Since I retired, I don’t dress up that much anymore, so I really don’t need 40 pairs of trouser socks. So any trouser sock that was in good condition but in a color I didn’t like was donated to charity.  Any trouser sock that was not in great condition was tossed.  I now have 26 pairs of trouser socks in the drawer. I know it’s still too many but I should not have to buy any trouser socks for a very, very long time.  Next, I went through all my white crew and ankle socks. I bought ankle socks thinking I would like them with my gym shoes. I hated them and never wore them.  So all the ankle socks were donated to charity since they were new.  Any crew socks with holes or elastic that was shot was tossed.

I added some dividers in the drawer and re-folded the socks.  Here’s what I ended up with:

So I guess I still wonder, how many pairs of socks does one person need?

I am participating in the 52 Weeks of Organizing Challenge hosted by Laura at Orgjunkie, and Organizing Mission Monday at Organize with Sandy.  Please check them out to find other organizing projects.

I knew I had a sock problem when my then 2 and 4 year old daughters each had about 30 pairs each (I did not have enough socks when I was a kid). I am better now, but 25 or so seems about right!

I have no idea! We keep our socks in baskets and my rule is that when a pair comes in a pair goes out. The basket is pretty full though. And my basket does not include fuzzy socks or fun knee-socks to wear around the house in the winter. So maybe I have a sock problem I didn’t know about? haha! I saw your linky on Organizing Junkie and wanted to say hi!

This is on my list to figure out! Since I’m washing clothes weekly now I’m cutting back significantly on how many of each type of clothing I keep. Yours look much more manageable now. Nicely done!

I THOUGHT I WAS BAD HAVING A FEW PAIRS OF SOCKS. I ONLY WEAR MY ANKLE SOCKS DURING THE SUMMER AND MY OTHER SOCKS WHEN ITS COLDER OUTSIDE. WORN OUT SOCKS ARE GOOD FOR DUSTING AROUND THE HOUSE TOO.
I USE TO USE SOCKS TO COVER BABYS HANDS TO KEEP THEM FROM SCRACHING THEIR FACE..
